—“The Master and Margaret” (1972) is a film adaptation of Mikhail A. Bulgakov’s novel of the same name. It is set in the Soviet Union during Stalin’s regime and follows several intertwined storylines. Nikolai Masoudov (played by Tognazzi), a gifted writer, and his assistant Margaret (played by Farmer), are working on a biblical tale of Pontius Pilate (played by Tadic). However, they are being constantly harassed by Woland (played by Cuny), Satan, and his lieutenants who kill their friend and send another to a Siberian Gulag prison. As a result of the harassment, Masoudov becomes paranoid and is ultimately locked up in a mental institution. Despite the danger, Margaret is determined to save him.
