From the vaults of midwest roadshow promoter JACK LAKE — who covered his film cans with golden-colored paint stenciled with the words: “Here is Your Pot of Gold!” — comes this unique and extremely rare Special Edition of sex-hygiene hoopla and old-school ballyhoo.
Sins of Love is an absolutely jaw-dropping bit of balderdash which illustrates “The Chances One Takes by Not Following the Conventions of Society” — especially the horrors of “Promiscuous Necking,” “Close Dancing” (“Shimmying and Shaking Arouses the Mind to Unclean Thoughts!”), and “Strip Poker Parties” — via a bunch of clips from old roadshow films (most of which we can’t identify) including some with full frontal nudity! Yowza, yowza, yowza! Though the vintage of the clips seems to be from the 1930s, there’s a definite clash of decades when the dangers of “Strip Tease” are demonstrated with two lengthy burlesque shorts from 1952 featuring strippers CHERI strutting their stuff. Wow.
Unwed motherhood is the theme of Life Begins, a “square-up” reel originally shown with The Wrong Rut (Lake’s revamped version of Not Wanted), which uses clips from The Wrong Rut to recap the story of stupid Sally Kelton, before segueing into the usual biological charts and graphs (“This is the vagina which is like a long tube….”), until finishing up with the inevitable birth-of-a-baby footage which, of course, is the sex-hygiene equivalent of a money shot.
A filmed book-pitch for The Art of Love has a guy babbling about everyone having “the sex instinct” but few knowing anything about it. The solution? Pay a dollar for the book in which sexual relations are “clear and lucidly explained,” as well as the meaning of the words “sodomy, nymphomania, sadist, lesbian, and queer.” Remember: “The Art of Love knows all, tells all, shows all!”
Before You Marry is, basically, a filmed lecture between a doctor and a couple about to be married, punctuated with old film clips, before the doc tells the woman all about the vagina, and the man all about the penis. (Wouldn’t it have been more helpful if he learned about the vagina and she about the penis? Just asking.)
An untitled syphilis short, used as a “square-up” reel with the phony feature Twisted Lives, combines scenes from Know for Sure with numerous other VD shorts. The end result is Hollywood veterans like J. CARROL NAISH, TIM HOLT, WARD BOND, and SAMUEL S. HINDS intermixed with closeups of oozing sores.
There are also trailers for Lake’s bogus releases The Naked Truth and Twisted Lives, CLAUDE ALEXANDER’s The Wondrous Story of Birth, and the still “lost” sex hygiene classic The Story of Bob and Sally (“The Truth Behind the Failure of Young Marriage” which also touts “The Renowned Exponent of Sex Hygiene, Roger T. Miles, the Man who Calls a Spade a Spade”), as well as “black-out” trailers for The Wrong Rut (“So jolting to the senses that many will actually faint!”) and Poor White Trash (with a voice claiming to be producer M.A. RIPPS). Finally, the trailer for The Life of Christ shows that salvation can be hyped just as effectively as sin: “See the Last Supper! See the Kiss of Death! See the Crucifixion!”
